Getting Started

In Zeus, your objective is to build up a successful, prosperous city while simultaneously dealing with any potential threats. Choose from the game's seven scenarios, each a multi-mission undertaking in which you tackle successively more complex objectives in the same municipality. Or you can try the "sandbox" levels -- looser, objectiveless games that focus on economic, military or general administration. To begin, put your sandals on and choose the type of game you want to play.

Controls

Zeus includes a series of tutorials that will walk you through the intricacies of city management -- construction, layout and economics. Once you're in the game, you can control everything with a few mouse clicks from the intuitive menu system. In the campaigns, the game adds new features and controls a few at a time so you won't be overwhelmed. You can access important city data and controls in the sidebar at the right of the screen.

Construction

Much of your time will be spent placing buildings and overseeing the general layout of your city. Efficiency is crucial, as no one likes to live in a confusing, ill-planned town. Buildings, roads and other constructible items are grouped logically in the sidebar, so you can quickly select and place whatever you want. Housing is just the beginning; people want food, entertainment, law enforcement and dozens of other niceties. Construction costs money, so match your pace to your income.

Economics

Taxes are your chief source of income early in the game. You can adjust the level of taxation as needed, but remember that people won't come to a city if the taxes are too high. Commerce is also important; people buying and selling goods contributes to your treasury, especially if there's an influx of temporary guests for an event like the Olympics. You also have the opportunity to trade with faraway cities once you've built the requisite structures.

War

Zeus is primarily a management simulation, but you will face enemies in the field from time to time. Building military and defensive structures is imperative. When combat occurs, it takes place right on the map, near (or even in) your city. Click a unit's icon and right click a location or enemy to issue move and attack orders.

Tip: Heroes

Attracting heroes to your city is a great way to earn prestige and help keep you safe. Heroes don't come to dismal backwaters, so it's reason enough to make your town pretty and efficient. Naturally, it wouldn't be ancient Greece without monsters. If there is a monster lair near your city, you'll be grateful for any heroes present.

Tip: Troops

Be aware that the troops in your armies are also citizens, and being away at war means they're not doing their regular jobs. Also, a major defeat can have a devastating impact on population.

Tip: Commerce

If you have more jobs than people, you can specify which industries take priority over others. You can also use roadblocks to help control foot traffic in your city, diverting workers to the areas they're needed most.

Tip: Trade

Trade is critical to the economic health of your city. Try to sell goods that are easy and cheap for you to make to some faraway city where they're considered luxuries.

Tip: Ye Gods

Managing your city means making nice with the gods. Temples built in their glory is a good way to keep them happy and to avoid getting walloped by thunderbolts or plagues. Don't antagonize or ignore them; they're vengeful.
