Basics
The primary goal of Zoo Tycoon is to build your zoo up to be the best it can. To do this, you will need to build proper habitats for your animals, hire enough staff and other support to take care of them, then build facilities for all your visitors. There are two modes of play in Zoo Tycoon; Scenario and Free. In Scenario mode, you will have specific goals for your zoo to achieve. In Free mode, you can build your zoo from the ground up just as you want. Most of your actions are chosen from the menu bar along the left side of the screen. This bar has options to build, adopt animals, hire staff, spend money on R&D, and more.
Animals
The most important part of your zoo is the animals, so you want to make sure you take care of them right. Start by building an enclosure for the animal you want to exhibit by building walls. Once the enclosure is complete, choose an animal or animals that you want to put inside. After that, make sure to customize the exhibit to match the animal. A jungle animal will need rainforest terrain and plenty of trees, while a desert animal may want nothing but sand and a few rocks. The better suited to their environment they are, the happier theyâ¿¿ll be, and visitors want to see happy animals.
Staff
Your animals will also need taking care of, and for that, youâ¿¿ll need to hire zookeepers. Just click the staff button, and hire away. Your keepers can either be set to wander around the park looking for any animals with needs, or they can be set to monitor specific exhibits. You will also need maintenance staff to keep things running smoothly and to clean up after your visitors. If you wish, you can also hire tour guides to improve your zooâ¿¿s service.
Visitors
The animals arenâ¿¿t the only ones with needs, you know. Your visitors will need places to eat, to sit down, to throw away their trash, and so on. Be sure to build plenty of food stands, bathrooms, and gift shops, and place them carefully so that visitors donâ¿¿t have to walk all over the place to find them. This will keep your visitors happy and continuing to come back. You can click on invididual guests to see what their specific needs are, and you can watch the guest happiness bar in the lower right corner to make sure that you are doing things right.
Tip: Tutorials
When you first start the game, you will automatically be started in the first tutorial. After that, it is up to you whether you want to continue on to see all the available tutorials or to start a new game. If this is your first time playing, we recommend continuing to play the tutorials so you can more easily see all your game options and abilities.
Tip: Listen to your Keepers!
When you click on an animal, its status box will appear in the lower right of the screen. Besides using this screen to view your animalsâ¿¿ needs, you can click on the keeper button to get detailed recommendations on how you should design your animalâ¿¿s exhibit. The animals can be very picky, so itâ¿¿s very important to follow these recommendations closely if you want to keep your animals happy.
Tip: Expansions
Zoo Tycoon Complete contains both the Dinosaur Digs and Marine Mania expansion packs, which provide new animals and buildings for your zoo. Be aware that these animals have special needs that must be provided for. For example, dinosaurs will need to be keep behind electrified fences, and will need scientists to take care of them. Each expansion has its own set of tutorials, and we recommend playing through these for more details.
